Budo Seminar in Sweden and an Iaido seminar in Spain
Following our recent seminar Seishin Iaido receive invitations to attend a Budo Seminar in Sweden and an Iaido seminar in Spain.
Seishin celebrates Kagami Biraki
Kagami Biraki is an old Japanese samurai traditional ceremony which literally translates to Opening the Mirror or, also, breaking of the Mochi (traditional Japanese rice cake) There are many ways to celebrate Kagami Biraki and many Japanese martial arts dojos follow this tradition.
This year, 2012, we arranged our ceremony to tie in with that of Dai Nippon Butoku Kai in the Kyoto Butokuden to signify the gathering as a symbolic and spirited occasion of continuing the training and friendship of friends and students.
The dojo was decorated in the traditional manner and this was then followed by
Harai no Gi - Opening Ceremony
Then the spiritual cleansing of the dojo
Then demonstrations of the arts within Seishin :-
Iaido, Iaijutsu, Judo, Karate Jujitsu and Aikido

Educational DVD
Seishin is pleased to announce the completion of our first educational DVD. This DVD covers Tachi Uchi no Kurai.
Tachi Uchi no Kurai is a two person kata (Kumitachi). Each Kumitachi presents the student with a different attack and potential defence. There are two roles in each Kumitachi, Uchidachi and Shidachi and, where applicable, the uchidachi is always the senior to the shidachi.
Kumitachi teaches the students how to gauge distance, predict an opponents movement, and react to different attacks. The student should understand the concepts of sen-no-sen (React and take initiative during the attack by anticipating the attack) and go-no-sen (Take initiative after the attack).

Renshi Scrivens teaches at Seminar
Renshi Scrivens travelled to the private dojo in south east
england to teach a group of selected students in specific
techniques of Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido. A warm and friendly
atmosphere made the day very enjoyable.
Iaido Seminar
The seminar with Sensei Ikuhama 6th Dan was a resounding
success with all those present again learning from such a
respected swordsman.
Iaido Seminar (Change of Date)
The seminar Iaido with Sensei Ikuhama 6th Dan Muso Shinden
Ryu orginally due to take place on 1st & 2nd August has
been postponed due to ill health. The new dates are 5th

Iaido & Kendo Seminar
On Saturday 4th July Renshi Scrivens
and students from Seishin attended an Iaido seminar held
at K2 Leisure
Centre in Crawley.
The instructor at this seminar for
both Iaido
and Kendo was Kyoshi Haruhiko Ochiai 7th Dan. The all
day seminar emphasised basic principles and was accordingly
levelled at the varied grade levels of those present.
The
two Iaido styles focused upon were Muso Shinden Ryu
and Suifu Ryu.
Kyoshi Ochiai from DNBK Honbu was not only
technically extremely interesting and very informative
but also highly
motivational. Renshi Scrivens was honoured to be
personally asked to perform a demonstration of Muso Shinden
Ryu.
Sunday 5th July saw Kyoshi Ochiai busy again teaching Kendo.
This included Kendo Kata Keiko, Gikeiko and friendly Shiai.
Everyone who took part in the seminars thought they were
a great success.
Ted Larter - a life remembered
`Hana wa né ni kaeru`
The flower goes back to its root
It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of a friend
and fellow student Ted Larter. Ted started Iaido later in
life and proved the point that age is never a barrier. He
was a most humble man, a true friend and a true martial artist.
He will live on in our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are
with his family.
Iaido Seminar
Seishin will be holding an Iaido seminar later this year
(Probably 1st & 2nd August) Sensei Ikuhama 6th Dan Muso
Shinden Ryu will be instructing at this event.
Seishin donates to good causes.
Seishin has just made substantial donations to two worthy
causes: The Badger and Wild life Protection Group in Burgess
Hill who care for all kinds of injured wild animals in the
area and The Shoebox Appeal which sends `shoebox` parcels
of clothes, toiletries and other basic needs people in to
Sierra Leone.
Chief Instructor said "It is always pleasing to be able
to give to worthy causes and this year is no exception. Both
of these groups carry out splendid work and perhaps our donations
can be be of some help"
Renshi Scrivens teaches Tachi Uchi no Kurai at Seminar
On Sunday 1st February 2009 a seminar was held at Warnham,
West Sussex. The seminar focused on Tachi Uchi no Kurai, a
form of Kumitachi (paired sword form) practiced as part of
Shinmei ryu and its branches. Indeed, many ryuha have something
similar. Originally more forms may have existed.
Tachi Uchi no Kurai, a form of kenjutsu, involves the striking
of swords together so bokuto are usually used.
The techniques are:
Deai
Tsukekomi
Ukenagashi

BUDO SEMINAR IN WALES
Instructors and Students from Burgess Hill based Seishin
Judo & Iaido attended a Budo (Japanese Martial Arts) Seminar
in Wales over the weekend of 15th and 16th November.
This seminar, held by the Yodokan Budo Association of which
Seishin is a member, took place at Honbu (Headquarters) Dojo
in Abercarn, Wales. The Traditional martial arts of Japan
are varied and with many styles.
The weekend began on the Saturday with training in Iaido,
Judo, Karate and Ju Jitsu..
The Instructors were Hanshi Wayne Taylor 8th Dan - Shotokai
Karate and Kyoshi Mike Selvey 6th Dan Tenshin Ryu Iaido
both good friends of Seishins Chief Instructor Renshi Bruce
Scrivens 5th Dan who taught Kodokan Judo and Muso Shinden
Ryu Iaido.
The atmosphere was superb as you would expect from true martial
artists exchanging knowledge with those only to eager to share
and learn from each other.
The following day saw some students including all those from
Seishin travel to a mountain waterfall to take part in a very
traditional Japanese Ritual of mental and spiritual purification
known as Misogi. The ceremony commences with spitting three
mouthfuls of Sake into the freezing water followed by two
hand claps and a bow before entering the waterfall. For ten
minutes the mind becomes one with nature, and exhilarating
experience.
A weekend of learning and honour.
